The classic warning signs
Anyone who tells you to pay a bill, fine, tax or fee with gift card codes is a scammer. Real organisations do not ask for payment this way.
Be wary of any request to read out or photograph the code on the back, to keep a call going while you buy cards, or to buy several cards quickly.
Messages claiming a relative, boss or official needs urgent help with gift cards should be checked by calling them on a number you already know.
Buying safely
Buy from a source you trust and check the card has not been scratched or tampered with. For digital codes, use a marketplace with escrow and keep chat on the platform.
Redeem a code promptly and keep your order record until it works.
If you already shared a code
Contact the card issuer immediately with the code and the date. Speed matters, but recovery is not guaranteed.
Report the scam to your local consumer or fraud authority and stop all contact with the person who asked.
Risks to understand
- A spent code generally cannot be recovered.
- Scammers use urgency and fear. Slow down and verify through a separate channel.
- Never send a code to anyone who contacts you first.
