The basic idea
With escrow, you pay the marketplace instead of paying the seller directly. The platform holds the money while the seller delivers. It is released to the seller after you confirm delivery or after a set period ends.
The point is simple: neither side has to trust the other with money first. The details, such as how long money is held, differ from marketplace to marketplace, so read the platform's own rules.
What escrow protects
It protects payments made on the platform. If an order goes wrong and you have not released it, you can raise a dispute and the marketplace reviews the evidence.
It also gives sellers some protection against buyers who falsely claim they did not receive something, which is why good records matter on both sides.
What escrow does not do
It does not protect anything you do outside the platform. A payment sent by bank transfer or chat app is not covered.
It does not change a game's terms of service, and it cannot help if you confirm an order before checking delivery or share your login with a seller.
Risks to understand
- Escrow reduces payment risk but does not remove terms-of-service or account risk.
- Confirming an order early usually ends your ability to dispute it. Check first.
- Scammers often try to move buyers off the platform precisely to escape escrow.

Is escrow the same as a refund guarantee?
No. Escrow holds money during the order, and disputes are decided on the evidence and the marketplace's rules.
When should I confirm an order?
Only after you have checked that exactly what you ordered has arrived and works.
Does escrow work if I pay the seller directly?
No. It only covers payments made through the platform's own checkout.
