Microsoft Accounts for Sale: What to Know Before You Buy
Affiliate disclosure: some links on this page are affiliate links. If you buy through them we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.
A Microsoft account can be linked to email, cloud storage, subscriptions and devices, so handing control of one to someone else, or taking one over, deserves more thought than most purchases.

What you are really buying
Marketplace listings usually deliver login details for an existing account, sometimes with a subscription or license attached. Ask the seller to state exactly what is included and for how long.
What Microsoft's own agreement says
The Microsoft Services Agreement (effective September 30, 2026 when we checked) says you cannot transfer your Microsoft account credentials to another user or entity, and asks you to keep your account details and password confidential. You are responsible for activity under your credentials.
It also says unused accounts can be closed: you need to sign in at least once every two years, and some services such as Outlook.com and OneDrive have shorter limits. When an account is closed your right to use it stops and its content is deleted unless the law requires otherwise.
Ownership and recovery
An account can be reclaimed by whoever holds its recovery email, phone number or security details. If those still belong to the seller, they may be able to regain access later.
Check what recovery information is set up and whether you are expected to change it. Do not assume a changed password means you are the only person with control.
Safer habits
Never use a bought account for anything important, such as personal email, banking notifications or irreplaceable files.
Use a unique password, enable the strongest sign-in protection available and keep the order record until you are sure everything works.
Compare the price with the provider's official plans and your region's options so you can judge whether the saving is worth the extra uncertainty.
Risks to understand
- Account transfers and resale may breach the provider's terms.
- Recovery details held by the seller can allow the account to be taken back.
- A compromised or reclaimed account can expose any data you stored in it.

Can a seller take the account back?
It is possible if they still control the recovery details. This is one reason many people avoid bought accounts for anything important.
Should I use it for my own email or files?
It is better not to. Keep personal and important data in accounts you fully own.
What should I do first?
Review the listing, secure the account as far as you are able, and keep the chat and order record.
